Breadcrumb
Check-ins for your own website.
Breadcrumb is an Android app for recording where you've been. Pick a place, add a note or a photo if you like, and the check-in is published on your own website using Micropub. You can browse your past check-ins in the app, and they stay on your site.
Did your site's sign-in page send you here? Your site is asking whether Breadcrumb may post for you, and this page is how it identifies the app. Only approve the request if you started the sign-in from Breadcrumb on your phone.
What it does
- Finds nearby places. The list comes from your own site rather than a third-party places service, and you can add a place that isn't listed.
- Adds the details. A check-in can have a note, tags, and a photo, and your site can also send it to the other services it's set up to post to.
- Lets you choose what to reveal. Each check-in can show its exact location, leave out the coordinates, or hide the location, or it can follow your site's default. You can also make a check-in visible only to you.
- Saves drafts. Save a check-in as a draft instead of publishing it, or sign in with drafts only so the app can't publish at all.
- Doesn't lose your work. A check-in in progress is saved as you go and comes back when you reopen the app.
- Shows your history. Browse past check-ins, and open or share them when your site provides their addresses.
How to use it
- Enter your website's address and sign in with IndieAuth. Your browser opens your site's own sign-in page, so the app never sees your password.
- Allow location access when asked, so the app can ask your site for places near you.
- Choose a place, add anything else you want, and tap Check in.
- Use the History tab to look back at earlier check-ins.
What it needs
- An Android phone running Android 13 or newer.
- A ClassicPress site with the IndieAuth, Micropub, Simple Location, and Post Kinds plugins. Other Micropub servers aren't a goal for now.
Breadcrumb is a personal project in beta. It's installed directly on the phone rather than from an app store, and there's no public download at the moment.
Your data
- Breadcrumb has no accounts, ads, or analytics, and no service of its own. It sends your check-ins, photos, and location to the website you sign in to.
- It asks your site for permission to create posts, upload media, and read your basic profile. With drafts only, it asks to create drafts instead of posts.
- Photos can include GPS positions and other metadata. Full image sends the original file with all of its metadata. Settings has an option to remove metadata when you set a check-in's location to hidden or without coordinates.
- Your site decides who can see what you post, and what's sent to other services after that.
